Did you know you can teach English online even if you have no degree?

TESOL TEFL ESL

It seems unbelievable doesn’t it? But it’s true! It’s not a scam and it could be more than a side gig.

There are people from all over the world who have given up going into the office to start teaching English online. Many of them didn’t have prior teaching experience, and even more of them don’t even have a degree. And we’re not saying they don’t have a teaching degree, we are saying they have no university or college degree at all.

It’s absolutely true! Here are some of the previous experience ESL teachers we know had before they got their first job:

    • Sales rep
    • School leaver
    • College dropout
    • Stay at home parent
    • Beautician
    • Social media manager
    • Construction site labourer
    • Retail manager
    • Cafe waitress
    • Bookkeeper
    • Graphic designer
    • Yoga teacher
    • Physiotherapist
    • Opera singer
    • Freelance writer
  • And the list goes on!

We have seen people from the ages of 18 to mid 60s get a job teaching English online. It could be you too!

With so many scams around telling you that you could earn an extra US$2000 a month, it can be hard to work out what is real and will actually allow you to earn that amount of money… or even more!

Most online positions start at around US$18/hour, and you can earn more as you get more experience and by earning bonuses. That means that by simply working 25 hours a week you can earn at minimum US$1950 a month. And you don’t even have to leave your home!

But many ESL teachers are earning at least US$25 an hour within 6 months!

Of course it is never that simple right? You can’t just start applying! Firstly you DO need a TESOL/TEFL certificate. The eTEFL certificate can be completed within a couple of weeks. And you can start applying for roles before you even finish your course. Find out more about how to get qualified with eTEFL.

And you need to get set up. You need a quiet space, decent internet, a PC or laptop, and a mic headset. But that is it! It is one of the lowest barriers to a new career that you can get.

If you aren’t ready to give up your day job yet or you are still at college or university teaching English online is actually perfect for that too.

Most companies allow you to chose the hours you work with a minimum of about 10 hours commitment a week. That means you can work maybe a couple hours throughout the week, or on the weekends which is often their busiest time.

Are you worried you won’t know what to teach? Don’t be!

Most online ESL companies tell you exactly what you need to do. Everything! They will give you all the lesson plans, resources and everything you need to say. If you can follow simple directions, you can teach English online.
