While China who is one of the biggest teaching English online markets have changed their rules for teachers, there is still plenty of opportunity for those without a degree.
It seems unbelievable doesn’t it? But it’s true! It’s not a scam and it could be more than a side gig.
There are people from all over the world who have given up going into the office to start teaching English online. Many of them didn’t have prior teaching experience, and even more of them don’t even have a degree. And we’re not saying they don’t have a teaching degree, we are saying they have no university or college degree at all.

And the list goes on!
We have seen people from the ages of 18 to mid 60s get a job teaching English online. It could be you too!
With so many scams around telling you that you could earn an extra US$2000 a month, it can be hard to work out what is real and will actually allow you to earn that amount of money… or even more!
Most teaching English online jobs for non-degree holders start at around US$10/hour, and but you can earn more as you get more experience and get more clients. That means that by simply working 25 hours a week you can earn at minimum US$1000 a month. And you don’t even have to leave your home!
But many ESL teachers are earning at least US$25 an hour within 6 months!
Also just to be upfront for many non-degree holders you will be applying for different jobs to degree holders. Just like in other jobs, teaching English online jobs will often initially pay more for degree holders, but by working on the other platforms you will have greater flexibility with your hours, what you teach and who you teach.
Of course it is never that simple right? You can’t just start applying! Firstly you DO need a TESOL/TEFL certificate.
The eTEFL certificate can be completed within a couple of weeks. And you can start applying for teaching English online roles before you even finish your course.
Find out more about how to get qualified with eTEFL.
And you need to get set up. You need a quiet space, decent internet, a PC or laptop, and a mic headset. But that is it! It is one of the lowest barriers to a new career that you can get.
If you aren’t ready to give up your day job yet or you are still at college or university teaching English online is actually perfect for that too.
Most platforms allow you to chose the hours you work with a minimum of about 10 hours commitment a week. That means you can work maybe a couple hours throughout the week, or on the weekends which is often their busiest time.
Are you worried you won’t know what to teach? Don’t be!
Some online ESL companies tell you exactly what you need to do. Everything! They will give you all the lesson plans, resources and everything you need to say. If you can follow simple directions, you can teach English online. Other times you can download free lesson plans from various websites or even purchase them. It’s a small price to pay for the chance to work from home.
